Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick: Preview: Review/Swatch/LOTD

What’s with companies and their obsession with long wear lipsticks and not getting the formula right? Well, let’s just say for me nowadays, the word long wear is synonymous to failure, drying and well ummm..lets say.. ho hum. So when Revlon had launched the new ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipsticks, I wanted to see if any color impressed me and if this range would change my opinion on long wear lipsticks.

There were 2 orange shades, one similar to Tutti Frutti from the Revlon Lip Butter Range but since these  lipsticks belong to the long wear category, I decided to stick to a shade that wouldn’t look terrible even if the formula is horrible. So I chose the shade Preview. This explanation is for those of you wondering why I didn’t choose the roange one from this range. 😛

What Revlon claims:

Is your lipstick giving you both moisture and wear? This velvety soft formula with moisturizing shea butter and aloe is food proof and doesn’t quit. Apply once and go.

Color: In terms of color choice there is a wide variety from bright, dark to light everyday wear shades. There are a total of 18 lipsticks that have been launched in India in this collection. What I love about these lip colors is that it can be worn sheer as well as built upon to give you any level of intensity you want in terms of color.

This particular shade, Preview looks different in the tube and on the lips. It is a sheer , sober, muted mauve with a lilac undertone.

Packaging: These come in the usual lipstick tube but this packaging is something I love!! The lipstick fits perfectly into the tube and there is no hassle of the lipstick getting stuck to the lid whatsoever. And the tube reflects the color of the lipstick inside and has a transparent cap which is pretty functional in terms of easy identification in my opinion.

When you twist the tube, you hear about 3 clicks before you can twist up the tube to get a good amount of lipstick out.

The Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick is claimed to be loaded with aloevera extracts and shea butter and it is evident that they’ve made an attempt to break the notion that all long wear lipsticks are drying. The lipstick doesn’t tug while applying and glides on smoothly. As much as I totally appreciate the thought behind it, I must say the moisturizing part of it doesn’t last beyond half an hour.

It is only after half an hour that the real problem starts. The lipstick clings on to the lips which is fine and is neither too drying nor moisturizing for about an hour. So after an hour and a half, when I was on the verge of deciding that maybe it isn’t bad in terms of formulation,  I realized that it made my lips dry and emphasized fine lines and wrinkles!! And that too this time frame is applicable only when your lips are thoroughly exfoliated and taken care of. I tried it on once when I hadn’t done that and within half an hour the fine lines on my lips were screaming for attention!!

Although it emphasized fine lines, thankfully my lips did not look shriveled up. There were two things I really liked about this lipstick though. It did not budge or transfer on to a glass. It stayed on for 7 hours and this was during the weekend when I tend to eat and drink a lot. And when it started disappearing, it wasn’t uneven or patchy.

Oh! And if you are the kind of person who always pucker your lips every 2 minutes, you’ll have a tough time doing that with this one!! My lips just refused to sway and move!!

That’s how sheer it is!!

Final Word: Well let me tell you that I have had a terrible experience with long wear lipsticks and I was pretty harsh when it came down to reviewing the Maybelline Super Stay 16 hour lipstick. That said and done, I would definitely say that this one is much better than that in terms of choice of colors and  formulation. 16 hours is a claim which definitely remains a claim. That being said, I wouldn’t say it is one of the best lipsticks in the market. If you love long wear lipsticks and don’t mind the formulation then yes, this is the best you can get.
