Wednesday Wisdom!: A Gooey Applause for Aloe Vera please!!

Today, a visit to the terrace with my grandmom to cut an Aloe Vera leaf for her (for indigestion issues) got me thinking on the health and beauty benefits of the plant.

Back in the day when Aloe Vera grew in the wilds, our grandmothers and their mothers used to think that the sticky and gummy paste that came when the leaves were cut, was poison. But now, this “poison” is a sure-shot remedy for SO many things – right from burns and dry skin, to even stalling cancer!

Here’s a quick list of things that Aloe Vera works well for!

For your skin:

  • The gel from the leaf can treat skin ailments like dermatitis and burns.
  • The gel is a great means to protect your skin against sunburns, and even helps prevent itching and scratching of the skin.
  • Wounds that are fresh can be healed with Aloe Vera, and bleeding from minor cuts can be arrested with it.
  • Aloe Vera is a great tool in curing insect bites blisters and combats any kind of skin allergies.
  • It helps moisturize your skin and gets rid of fine lines, wrinkles and dead cells on the surface of your skin. It can also remove stretch marks!

For your body:

  • Drinking Aloe Vera can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
  • It is a great remedy that helps you with weight loss by stabilizing the metabolic rate in the body and cutting down lipid levels besides burning fat.
  • Aloe Vera is also a great deal useful in medicines, particularly for piles, ulcers, amenorrhoea and jaundice.
  • It can keep cancer at bay, since it helps reduce the strength of cancerous cells. Acemannan, which is a a phytonutrient found in Aloe Vera has anti-cancer properties with an ability to quicken the obliteration of cancer cells and tumours.
  • It can cure radiation burns, and can ease inflammation in the body such as from rheumatism, arthritis and inflammation of the eyes and ears.  The external application of the gel can even help ease muscle and joint pain.
  • Aloe Vera is a great source of Vitamins E and C and can enhance the quality of essential nutrients in the body.
  • Consumption of Aloe Vera also provides relief from digestive disorders.  It prevents symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, acts as a laxative and helps avoid constipation.
  • It helps regulate blood pressure, prevents heart attacks and strokes, diabetes and other issues of the same kind.
