DIY Homemade & Natural Sugar Lip Scrub

Hello there!

This is it.

divassence natural skincare challenge

The time has come to step up my blogging game with the #31daysofnaturalbeauty challenge, where I either write a blog post or share a picture on social media related to natural beauty (skincare, hair care tips, recipes, benefits of natural ingredients and so on!) every single day this month. Now who’s in?

Let’s start off with a very simple DIY recipe for chapped, cracked lips. Now, our lips do get chapped, crack like parched land and eventually the dry skin starts peeling off. Laziness or irritation eventually gets the better of us and we either peel off the dry skin or bite it off which leads to bruised lips. Been there, done that. Not such a pleasant sight.

Winter is upon us and dry, chapped lips are going to haunt you. Well, instead of hurting ourselves or our wallets, let’s indulge our lips to easy DIY lip balms and scrubs. I’m starting off with this easy lip scrub which not only does wonders for the lips but tastes delicious as well! 😀

You’ll need:

  1. Brown sugar: 1 tablespoon (you could adjust according to the quantity you want to make)
  2. Ghee/Olive Oil: start off with 1/4 teaspoon and add more till you reach the desired consistency

Method:
Mix the brown sugar and ghee/oil of your choice in a bowl till the desired consistency is reached. Ideally, the brown sugar should stick to each other and form a consistency that can be scooped out. The sugar should not dissolve in the ghee/oil used. Transfer to a clean, dry container and store in the refrigerator for a week.

The only reason why I still don’t consider myself vegan is because I still have a spoon of the  oh-so sinful ghee (clarified butter) everyday. I do not consume curd (although I use it in my skin and hair packs ocassionally) or cow’s milk. Anyway, more on that some other day but yes, if you love ghee you could use ghee to ensure the brown sugar comes together. Ghee also acts as an excellent moisturizer for the lips so it is a win-win situation here. The same applies to olive oil. If you’re vegan (or not), you could use olive oil and/or any one of the oils listed below.

  • Avocado Oil
  • Argan Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Pomegranate Oil

Why Brown Sugar?
Brown sugar is no as abrasive as white (refined) sugar in my opinion.

These are the ones I have tried. You could use any oil provided it is safe for applying on the lips.

Make it yummy!
Add less than a drop of vanilla, orange or peppermint essence if you love delicious-smelling lip scrubs! This really depends on the quantity of lip scrub you would be making but I suggest making a small batch at a time though. If you are using ghee, the essence isn’t the best thing to add to your lip scrub since it clashes with the scent of the ghee.

Few things to remember:

  • Make small batches and store them for upto 1.5-2 weeks maximum.
  • You can mix a few drops of coconut oil or avocado oil or any of the oils mentioned above for additional benefits.

How to use:

  1. Take a little quantity of the (delicious) lip scrub and use your finger to gently scrub the lips.
  2. Leave it on for 4-5 minutes for the goodness of the oil/ghee to soak in.
  3. Wipe it off with a soft cloth or soft tissue. That way the excess oil/ghee on the lips would continue to moisturize the lips
