Maybelline Bold Matte Lipstick: MAT 3: Review/Swatch/LOTD

By Ghayathri

Hello!!

It has been so long since I reviewed a lipstick and I’m happy ecstatic to be back with Maybelline Bold Matte lipstick in shade 3   I’m a matte lover so when the Bold Matte range launched last month I was very eager to try it so rushed to the store, saw the shades, swatched the lipsticks and I felt disappointed  Because the shades were all true to their name, they were all very bold except MAT 3 which hardly shows up when you swatch it. After wasting a lot of time roaming around the store thinking, I brought this baby home.  Okay okay, no more stories, lets get on with the review 😀

What Maybelline says about Maybelline Bold Matte By Colour Sensational Lip Color:

  • Maybelline’s 1st matte lipstick in India
  • 5 trendy vibrant shades in a brilliant matte texture
  • Hydrating matte with honey nectar
  • Moisturising agents like rosa canina oil and jojoba oil
  • Powderless matte pigments ensure true vivid shades

Price: Rs.375 for 3.9g

Shelf life: 36 months

Ingredients:

The packaging wins brownie points from me! A matte red case with a tiny mirror on top, cute and thoughtful! I wish all lipsticks came with such tiny mirrors, makes touch ups easier  It closes with a dull click, not sure if it would be travel friendly. Shade name and date of manufacture are printed below on a label which matches the shade. I like the shade-label-matches-shade concept, makes searching for lipsticks easier  It has a very slight fragrance which disappears on application, the fragrance is so light that it would be hard to find unless you sniff it continuously with an intent to check if it has a fragrance 😛

Coming to the shade, it is a sheer orange shade and my first orange lippy *Yayyyyy!!!* The colour is sheer but buildable. It looks like a vibrant orange on tube but when you swatch it once, it hardly shows up, looks more like the swatch of a tinted lip balm than like the swatch of a lipstick (let alone a lipstick range which claims to have bold shades). It takes 3-4 swipes on lips for the colour to show up properly, still it wasn’t enough to cover the pigmentation completely. The picture shown below was taken after 3 swipes. Swatches of all 5 Maybelline Bold Matte Lipsticks here.

Be sure to prep your lips before you apply this, otherwise it clings to all the dry patches and looks horrible, seriously. On top of a lip balm it glides smoothly, no tugging, no dragging. If applied on top of a lip balm it stays for around 2-3 hours. Instead, apply lip balm, wait for 10 minutes, wipe it off and then apply this, then it stays put for more than 4 hours easily (with light snacking) and it stains to a nice coral colour.

I seriously feel that Maybelline should have included one more line in their description : Handle with care! When I got it home eagerly and swiped it again and again on my lips for the colour to show up properly, without any warning the bullet broke off and fell down  The lipstick is not creamy, it doesn’t even look like it might be prone to damage but it broke and left me fuming (I didn’t apply too much pressure, promise ). So ladies, be careful, it looks like a strong pillar but breaks like a matchstick! I don’t know how I’m going to use it properly hereafter, it will take so long to build the colour using a lip brush that I would rather switch to wearing another colour :-/

Summing up the pros and cons of MAT3,

Pros:

  • Application is smooth
  • Sheer orange colour – good for both day and night
  • Buildable coverage
  • Does not dry out my lips
  • Decent staying power
  • Affordable
  • Packaging is very good, love that tiny mirror

Cons:

  • Not bold!
  • Not matte!
  • Prone to breakage

Final Word: If you want to try out a sheer orange shade at an affordable price, this is the one you are looking for! Get it, but always remember this when you use it : Handle with care 😛
